LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATION: THE ROLE AND IMPACT OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS
Keywords:
educational leadership, school principal, educational policies, strategic management, school administrationAbstract
This study aims to examine the role of school principals in the development and implementation of educational policies. Leadership in education is not limited to managing the administrative functioning of schools; it also includes multidimensional responsibilities such as implementing educational reforms, supporting teachers, and improving student achievement. In this study, a descriptive literature review method was employed. Studies published between 2010 and 2025 were reviewed through databases such as Google Scholar, ERIC, Scopus, and Web of Science. The findings indicate that school principals play a strategic role in implementing educational policies at the local level. Principals’ strategic management skills significantly contribute to improving school culture, increasing teacher motivation, and implementing innovative educational practices. However, bureaucratic barriers, limited resources, and resistance to change were identified as major challenges affecting school leadership processes. The study concludes that school principals should be granted greater authority and autonomy, provided with more professional development opportunities, and involved more actively in educational policy decision-making processes. Strengthening the leadership roles of school principals is essential for achieving sustainable success in education.
